Stopislamophobia

New Initiatives:

  1. Reporting Islamophobia: Data-tracking from incident to resolution.
  2. Reporting Islamophobia National Roundtable.

Context: In the events which followed, September 11, 2001, there was a significant increase in the targeting of Muslims and Muslim communities in Canada. MARU was formed as a non-profit society in 2005 to respond to these practices and provide an informed, community engaged space in which to seek government accountability and reforms.

Stopracialprofiling.ca was initiated in 2005 as a research based, community engaged, advocacy project. It involved members of the various legal, civil society, academic, and profiled, racialized groups.

The Archive page provides some guidance as to the research, media, and engagement activities which have taken place over the past 20-plus years.

2024 onwards: Moving forward, MARU is now embarking on a set of new engagement, research and advocacy initiatives. Our hope is to provide a set of connections and productive paths forward, between the post-September/2001 environment and current events which relate to Islamophobia.

The site www.stopislamophobia.ca is being incorporated within the larger www.stopracialprofiling.ca website to mark this new initiative.

The Senate of Canada has released a landmark study on Islamophobia in Canada on November 2023 – “Combatting Hate: Islamophobia and its impact on Muslims in Canada”. It will serve as one of the guides, amongst others, as we move forward with new initiatives.
