New ‘Report Islamophobia’ campaign launched in British Columbia
Campaign responds to Muslim community needs
StopIslamophobia.ca is launching a British Columbia wide campaign in March 2025 to inform Muslim communities about their rights when they experience Islamophobia.
Multilingual brochures in English/Farsi, English/Arabic, English/Urdu, and English/French are being made available online and in print form. The printed brochures will be distributed by various community partners including the Centre for Comparative Muslim Studies at Simon Fraser University, the Muslim Food Bank, and the Islamophobia Legal Assistance Hotline.
Zool Suleman, Executive Director of the MARU Society, which is hosting the initiative notes, "Both the Senate of Canada and the House of Commons have recommended in recent reports that Muslim communities need to be better informed, and assisted, when they experience Islamophobia in their daily lives."
In addition to the brochures, there will also be an active street poster campaign to create broader awareness.
Researchers believe that incidents of Islamophobia are significantly under reported in Canada. "When effected communities are informed about their rights, they can better pursue their legal remedies", stated Suleman.
The campaign will start in Greater Vancouver and then be rolled out across various locations in British Columbia through community partnerships.
